| Hostels Officer - The Housing department of a busy Local Authority based in South London requires a Part time Hostels Officer to work within the Homeless Persons Unit, working in conjunction with Allocations Officer, Referral Officers, Housing Benefit Assessors, Housing Advisors and Resident Liaison Officers. The candidate will be responsible to the Hostels Manager for assistance in the efficient and harmonious management of the Homeless Persons Unit (consisting of 82 flats) and the pool of homeless hostel accommodation. JOB DESCRIPTION *Assists the Hostels Manager in day to day management of all existing and new hostel property acquired by Homeless Persons Unit. *Accompany all new tenants when viewing their prospective property. Ensures that all relevant information for new tenancy/benefit applications is completed. *Carries out daily visits and inspections at small Homeless Persons Unit hostels, reporting incidents of non-occupation and/or any problems in respect of accommodation or residents. *Monitor and calculate payments made by tenants and Housing Benefit. *Assists in maintaining a safe and peaceable environment at the Unit and other small hostel accommodation including dealing with disputes between families, which arise from time to time. *Assists in maintaining good communication and relationships with residents of the surrounding area, responding to any complaints, which may arise. *Deals with enquiries from outside organisations e.g. DSS, NHS (doctors, health visitors etc), Probation Officers, Police and other statutory bodies. *Advise management on all aspects of maintaining safety and security at the Homeless Persons Unit and small hostel accommodation and recommends changes where appropriate. *Must have experience of working with members of the public in stressful situations in a front line environment, together with the ability to deal with clients tactfully and impartially whilst maintaining a sympathetic but firm approach. *Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals both verbally and in written correspondence is essential. *A clean drivers license and the ability to provide a car for use in carrying out the duties of the post.
