CRASH

Construction4Professionals are proud to be supporting Crash's Red Friday next month, the whole team are planning to take part in the day by dressing in red to raise some money for the charity. There should be a few photo opportunities on Red Friday on the 18th May so hopefully we can get a picture of all the team together for the newsletter next month.

Crash was founded in 1991 by Tony Denison, he started the charity in his garage after being troubled by the sight of homeless people on the streets of London. Tony's aim was to use the support of leading companies within the construction industry and property sectors to help convert empty office spaces into temporary cold weather shelters.

The charity has well known patrons within the construction industry such as Galliford Try, Davis Langdon, AMEC and Balfour Beatty who have all given their support to the charity over the years and been involved in fund raising projects as well as giving their invaluable support in funding running costs of various projects.

If you want to offer your support to Crash please visit their website http://www.crash.org.uk/ too see how you can get involved.

4,000 new "Construction and the Built Environment" Diploma Places Available from September 2008

4000 young people across the country will benefit from more places being available on the Construction and Built Environment Diploma from September 2008. The new initiative aiming to help 14-19 years onto the right path for a successful career was announced by Alan Johnson, the Education and Skills Secretary on the 28th March. 40,000 other places have been made available across other sectors including Creative & Media, Society & Development, IT and Engineering.

The aim of this new diploma is to give students the ability to learn practical skills as well as to continue studying core subjects such as English and Mathematics. The diplomas will work alongside GCSE's and A Levels and can be used as entry into university, the benefit of studying these types of diplomas is that students get a real feel for the industry unlike more traditional classroom teaching, students will also be required to undertake a 10 day work experience placement to test their knowledge as well as individual project work to encourage initiative.

The diplomas have been designed with careers in mind and encourage practical teaching methods; they have been created in partnership with employers from the construction industry including AMEC and Mitie to ensure students are learning skills that are valuable to employers.

CV Searching now Live for employers

If you have uploaded a CV or used the CV Builder available on the site to generate a CV employers will now be able to search for you if you fit their requirements. Employers can search for various fields when using the searching facility such as job titles, experience, and can even use the AI searching facility which will match key words up in your CV to a particular job description. It is important that you make the most of your CV and show off your skills to your advantage, recruiters may see hundreds of CVs for any one particular job so it is crucial that you make yours stand out.

Please read below for some helpful hints to make yours stand out from the crowd:

A thorough CV will include a number of elements, it can be made up of:

Personal information - such as name and contact details.

Personal statement - This should be a paragraph's description summarising your career aspirations, what you look for in a job etc. As well you can highlight your strengths using a number of key words that will grab an employer's attention.

Employment history - If you have any gaps in your employment history, you should try and explain why. As well, it is not always enough to simply mention where you worked and for what time period; it is best to include a brief description of what your role involved and perhaps highlight any key skills learnt whilst performing that role.

Qualifications - include here all relevant qualifications to date (professional, university, college school, Health & safety, IT etc) starting with the most relevant and most recent.

Extra tips...

Key words- Your CV will now be available to employers who will most probably be searching using key terms & words, these may take the form of; the job title of the role they are looking to fill; character traits; skills; experiences etc so it is best to be as explanatory as possible. Make sure you use lots of positive and descriptive words to outline your experience, ones that will be easily picked up on.

Highlight particular achievements- It may be worth stating clearly any achievements, awards, targets met, etc that you are particularly proud of and think will support your application and make your CV stand out from the competition.

Personal achievements- Include anything here that supports your character and says a little more about the kind of person you are, interests, hobbies, achievements, charity or voluntary work etc.

Contact Details- Make sure you include accurate contact details and perhaps give recruiters a couple of contact options e.g. phone number and e-mail - to ensure that they'll be able to reach you

You can upload your CV or change your existing one at anytime by logging into your account and using the tool bar at the right hand side of the page. As well you are able to "show" or "hide" your profile depending on your current situation - again this can be found within your account management options on the site. http://www.construction4professionals.co.uk/
